A word about the materials used and why we selected them….
We are not aware of any item or product that is universally 100% bird safe. Also we are unaware of (and thankful that there aren’t) bird testing laboratories where products and materials are safety tested on companion birds. We are very concerned about safety and we are always balancing safety with the need for a meaningful and adventurous life experience for our own feathered companions. We encourage you to conduct your own research on the products and materials we have selected. We are willing to construct Flight Decks with materials you prefer providing they are available to us.
Poplar: Poplar is a light colored hardwood and is used for the construction of toys, cutting boards, countertops, bowls, utensils and crates for fruits and vegetables. Poplar branches are sold as natural perches and Poplar wood is used in many bird toys. Poplar is generally recognized as a wood that is safe for birds.
Birch: Birch is a light colored hardwood. Birch dowels were the original dowel bird perch. Birch is generally recognized as a wood that is safe for birds. Bowls, rolling pins, utensils, toothpicks, cutting boards, counter tops and other food related items are often constructed of Birch.
Titebond III: The makers of Titebond state that Titebond III is non toxic, solvent free and FDA approved for indirect food contact. It is approved for use in cutting boards. If you would like more information on Titebond III please visit their website at:

Stainless Steel: Chain and hardware is stainless steel. Stainless Steel is recognized as being bird safe.
